The name Selsey is thought to have derived from Seal Island (an Island inhabited by Seals).

Indeed it is well known that Selsey previously was an Island only accessible by boat or ferry.

Selsey was joined to the mainland about 200 years ago by a wooden bridge Which has now been replaced by a modern

Causeway known as the “Ferry”.
